COMMUNITY DENTAL HEALTHCARE WORKER  TRAINING - DJIBOUTI FALL 2019
Elise will be heading to Djibouti this fall to train 10 local students in the mPOWER Dental Hygiene Module.  We will be partnering with Life in Abundance, a non-profit organization that focuses on sustainable transformation in Africa.  With turmoil in the Middle East, refugees from Somalia, Ethiopia, Eritrea and Yemen flee to Djibouti to war and famine.  Djibouti, located in the Horn of Africa, one of the poorest countries in the world, is home to three main refugee camps:  Ali Addeh (Somalia/Eritrea), Holi Holi (Somalia/Eritrea) and Markazi (Yemen/Ethiopia). After an initial assessment by our in-country partner of the social, community health and spiritual needs of the region, healthcare was found the most lacking.  The aim of this training it to begin a Community Healthcare/Dental Worker program to provide access to care and the build the foundation of a sustainable healthcare program.  We need to raise $3850 for this Community Healthcare Worker Training.  You can help fund this training by clicking here:

COMMUNITY DENTAL HEALTHCARE WORKER TRAINING - UGANDA SUMMER 2018

This summer Elise will be returning to Uganda to train nurses in the mPOWER Dental Extraction module for Renewal Healthcare Network (RHN).  With a focus of sustainability, since 2009, RHN has conducted Medical Camps in refugee camps and rural areas where there is no access to care.   Due to a loss of nurses with the Community Dental Healthcare Worker certificates, two of their rural clinics in Bethany and Muleete are no longer sustainable.  This means there is no access to medical or dental care in these areas.  With the addition of the Community Dental Healthcare Workers, more patients will have access to dental care, and the rural clinics can return to sustainability.  We need to raise $7120 for this Community Dental Healthcare Workers training.  You can help fund this training by clicking here:

MIDDLE EAST REFUGEE CARE - SPRING 2017

Greece is one of the main gateway countries for refugees fleeing from the Middle East and approximately 70,000 refugees are living in substandard conditions. With the closing of European borders, these refugees have no where to go.  The official camps are run-down, dangerous, and over-crowded, so many have created their own "camps".  The refugees we encountered has been fleeing ISIS longer than those we saw in the Middle East. There were no facilities to work out of, and our team set-up make shift clinics.  For two weeks we provided free medical and dental care, also providing prescription medications at no charge.   We also had the opportunity to prepare and serve dinner.  Once again we were deeply moved by their stories.

MIDDLE EAST REFUGEE CARE - FALL 2016

With the uprising of ISIS in Iraq and Syria, most refugees fled with only the clothing they wore.  The large influx of over 1 million refugees rapidly overwhelmed the camps.  Those that live outside the camps have no access to resources such as food, healthcare or adequate living conditions.  We traveled to provide medical and dental care to the Syrian and Iraqi refugees in the region. It was heartbreaking to see how lack of nutrition, traumatic experiences and a lack of shelter had affected their health.  It was a life-changing experience being able to provide care and hear their stories.

UGANDA COMMUNITY DENTAL HEALTHCARE WORKERS 2011 - PRESENT

In 2011 Elise participated in a medical/dental mission to rural Uganda where there is no access to healthcare .  We would pull up every morning to an incredibly long line of patients needing care.  We would see patients until it was too dark to see, but the line never went down.  Elise realized we were barely making a dent in the problem, and there should be a better solution.  We found mPOWER, a NGO, that trains indigenous people to become Community Dental Healthcare Workers (CDHWs).  The first training was in 2012 on the Dental Extraction module, and the CDHWs have continued providing care throughout the country.
